Solect Energy expands into Connecticut

Solect COO Jim Dumas (right) and Chief Development Officer Craig Huntley are expand their business into Connecticut.

Hopkinton’s commercial-scale solar company Solect Energy announced Tuesday it is expanding into Connecticut and has hired a new director of business development.

The expansion follows recent growth of Solect's operations and maintenance services, and will see the company pursuing new projects in Connecticut as a licensed Connecticut solar provider. The expansion marks the third state Solect will operate in following a recent expansion into Rhode Island

“Connecticut has seen tremendous growth in solar energy in the past four years, and is expected to continue that growth over the next several years and beyond,” Craig Huntley, chief development officer and co-founder of Solect Energy, said in a statement.

According to the company, Connecticut has so far installed 265 megawatts (MW) of solar energy, and is committed to 20 percent renewable energy by 2020 with an expected 900 MW to be installed over the next five years.

Kent McCord will be at the forefront of the expansion effort into Connecticut, according to Solect, putting to use his 15 years of experience in the renewable and alternative energy market. Prior to joining Solect, McCord was director of sales and marketing at Doosan Fuel Cell, a leading manufacturer of fuel cell combined-heat-and-power (CHP) systems in South Windsor, Conn.

“Connecticut has among the highest electricity costs in the country, and solar is a great way for building owners to reduce utility costs while making their own renewable energy. With a strong Renewable Energy Credit (REC) program and attractive financing available from the CT Green Bank, commercial rooftop solar systems are a smart investment in our state,” he said in a statement.

McCord will be working out of Granby and focus on commercial solar.
