Smartphones Rising

Smartphones will make up more than half of worldwide handset sales by 2015, according to a new report by Pyramid Research.

Just this year, the report says, global smartphone sales will reach 1.46 billion units and make up 27 percent of the cell phone market. Total market growth this year will come largely from Africa and the Middle East, driven by low-end smartphones and inexpensive traditional cell phones.

Much of the demand in developed markets will come from high-end smartphones with new technology, but cheaper smartphones will also be in demand.

By 2015, the report predicts, Windows Phone will be the leading smartphone operating system, overtaking Android and other players.
