Small Business Saturday saw 14-percent year-over-year growth as the day devoted to shopping local following Thanksgiving completed its sixth official year.
The day drew 95 million consumers out, representing an 8-percent increase over 2014, according to the Post-Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and American Express. Spending was also up, growing to $16.2 billion from $14.3 billion in 2014.
Support for the movement to shop local was also shown on social media, with over 85 million social media engagements in support of Small Business Saturday, according to the NFIB. In addition, 551 city proclamations were made in support of Small Business Saturday by mayors and other elected officials throughout the U.S.
