SJC To Hear Cape Wind Challenge

Associated Industries of Massachusetts says the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court is set to hear its arguments for voiding an agreement between National Grid and Cape Wind on Sept 8.

AIM has been a vocal opponent of the 15-year deal, which it says will add $1 billion to the cost of National Grid customers' electricity. Proponents say the Cape Wind offshore wind farm will be an environmentally friendly source of power which won't necessarily cost much more than electricity from other sources.

Other groups, including the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound and organizations representing other power generators, are also challenging the agreement.

AIM said a decision in the case is expected in late 2011 or early 2012.

The state Department of Public Utilities approved the deal in November.
