Six new Worcester County coronavirus deaths on Wednesday, 124 new cases

Six new coronavirus-related deaths in Worcester County were reported Wednesday, bringing the county's total in the pandemic to 30, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

The state also announced 124 new Worcester County coronavirus cases, bringing the county's total to 1,296. That's a one-day increase of 11%.

Statewide cases rose Wednesday by 1,588, or 10%, hitting 16,790.

In both the county and state cases, overall numbers rose by their highest one-day marks at any point in the pandemic.

The six new Worcester County deaths included a woman in her 50s, two women in their 80s, two men in their 80s, and a woman in her 70s. It was unknown if they had pre-existing conditions, according to the Department of Public Health.

The city of Worcester has reported 440 cases Wednesday, up from 398.

Worcester hospital systems Saint Vincent Hospital and UMass Memorial Health Care had 130 total coronavirus inpatient cases and 41 who were in intensive care as of Wednesday, according to the city. The two hospitals have had 19 coronavirus deaths and 83 of their employees have tested positive for the virus.

The state Department of Public Health said 87,511 tests have been done for the virus, an increase in one day of 6,167.

Total United States cases were approaching 420,000 mid-afternoon Wednesday, with more than 14,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Internationally, cases have hit nearly 1.5 million with more than 87,000 deaths.
