Edgar Muntz, Jr. has been ordered to reimburse the State $120,000 for cleanup following an explosion of a backyard shed at a property he owned through his 393 Oak Street Realty Trust.

The settlement follows a lawsuit brought by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s office, filed in Suffolk Superior Court, according to Wednesday press release from the attorney general’s office.

In 2016, Muntz hired P&M Asphalt Services to demolish the backyard shed, which was filled with hazardous materials including dynamite, mercury, arsenic, chloroform, and sodium cyanide. The materials were released into the air and soil when the shed burst into flames, according to the Attorney General’s Office. In addition, the defendants failed to report the explosion of contamination to authorities.

“These defendants ignored our state’s important environmental protection laws and exposed workers and nearby residents to hazardous materials,” said Healey in the press release. “Today’s settlement ensures that our taxpayers won’t foot the bill for these dangerous actions and should deter others from such reckless conduct.”
