A long-vacant building across from the Whole Foods-anchored Lakeway Commons shopping mall in Shrewsbury may be redeveloped into a mixed-use commercial and residential complex, according to a Shrewsbury Planning Board meeting from Oct. 7.
At the meeting, Shrewsbury developer John Grenier of J.M. Grenier Associates Inc. discussed plans for a 16-unit, 18,240-square-foot apartment complex with 2,000 square feet of retail space. The site would be redeveloped under the Lakeway Commons mixed-use overlay district.
Currently, the property at 34-36 Harrington Ave. includes a condemned building vacant for years, Grenier said.
In a deal closed Sept. 10, the site sold for $899,000 to a Sutton-based firm registered to real estate agent Rebecca Yarnie.
Planning board members voiced concerns about parking, traffic, and snow removal, saying the 16 units may be too dense for the area. Clerk Joseph Thomas suggested the developers shrink the plan by one or two units.
“That area is already so saturated,” he said. “Scaling down the apartments would make me more comfortable.”
The board voted to continue the public hearing on the project on Nov. 4.
