The CVS store at 720 Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury is expanding its coronavirus screening services to those 65 and older who show symptoms of the virus, the company announced late Tuesday.
Criteria include cough or sore throat, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, or a fever of 99.6 degrees or higher.
The CVS was the first in the Rhode Island company's 9,900-store footprint to set up such screening, which takes place in tents in its parking lot. Screening started March 19 for only first responders and medical professionals who are symptomatic, and the location has screened an average of 200 people a day, according to CVS.
The screening tents won't administer tests on a walk-up basis. To make a screening appointment, people are asked to call 401-374-6777 or 855-287-2345.
The Shrewsbury program is a pilot for what could become more such screening areas across the CVS chain. CVS is also waiving charges for home delivery of prescription medications and making diagnostic testing and Aetna-covered telemedicine visits available with no co-pay.
Local screening tents have also been set up at UMass Memorial Medical Center's University Campus in Worcester and at Marlborough Hospital but are also available only to referred patients.
