Shrewsbury couple faces jail time after faking being Calif. steroid maker

A Shrewsbury couple will face time in a federal prison for manufacturing steroids and selling them using labels from a legitimate pharmaceutical company.
Tyler Bauman, 32, and Kathryn Green, 29, will serve 10 years and a year and one day in prison, respectively. Each received three years of supervised release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts announced Thursday.
Bauman pleaded guilty in August to conspiracy to distribute steroids, conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit drugs, conspiracy to launder money, possession with intent to distribute steroids and trafficking in counterfeit drugs.
Green pleaded guilty last April to one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Bauman, Green and five others charged began making steroids from raw materials purchased overseas. The group used “Onyx” labels to pass the drugs as actual steroids from a pharmaceutical company.
Onyx is a California-based pharmaceutical company owned by Amgen Inc. However, that company doesn’t manufacture steroids, but rather, drugs to treat cancer.
Bauman, via Instagram and other social media platforms, used the monikers “musclehead320,” “onyx_roid” and “onyxpharma” to claim to be an “Onyx sponsored athlete” and market and sell the steroids.
The proceeds from Bauman’s phony steroid sales were laundered through a tanning salon in Beverly, which he and a co-conspirator owned and operated solely to launder money.
Green’s main role in the plot was to pay another co-conspirator to ship steroids and collect payments from customers, according to the government.
