Shrewsbury attorney James Gavin Reardon Jr. was unanimously confirmed to a Superior Court judgeship on Wednesday.
The Governor's Council voted 8-0 to support Gov. Charlie Baker's pick, with Councilor Jennie Caissie describing him as an "outstanding nominee" who is "incredibly well-respected in Worcester County."
Reardon owns and operates his own Worcester law practice and is of counsel to another Worcester firm - Milton, Laurence and Dixon. He is a past president of the Worcester County Bar Association.
Reardon's interview by the council last week became a flashpoint in one councilor's re-election campaign. Councilor Eileen Duff, a Gloucester Democrat, asked Reardon if he was Roman Catholic while questioning him on his views of reproductive rights, and Reardon declined to discuss his religious beliefs.
Duff's Republican opponent in the Nov. 8 election, Richard Baker of West Newbury, called on her to apologize, arguing that her inquiries into Reardon's religion displayed an "intolerant and hostile attitude." Duff, who has said Reardon indicated ties to the Catholic church in his application, rejected Baker's call for an apology and said her interaction with Reardon was cordial and appropriate.
Duff's questioning of Reardon was not discussed during Wednesday's council meeting.
