The Worcester Sharks will stay in town for at least two more years under a new extension of their license agreement.
Silicon Valley Sports and Entertainment, the owner of the American Hockey League team, has exercised its option to extend the agreement with the city of Worcester and DCU Center management company SMG until 2013. The original contract, signed in 2006, was a five-year lease with an option to extend for two years to 2013 and again for another three years to 2016.
City Manager Michael O’Brien has been supporting the team by assembling a group of business leaders to promote ticket sales and corporate sponsorships.
Attendance this season is up 26 percent compared to last season, and ticket revenues are up 28 percent, according to the team.
