Seven biopharmaceutical firms, including Marlborough-based Sunovion Pharmaceuticals, will join to form the Massachusetts Neuroscience Consortium.
Announced today at the 2012 BIO International Convention in Boston, the consortium will fund pre-clinical neuroscience at Massachusetts academic and research institutions.
The other participating companies are Abbott Laboratories – which has a facility in Worcester, Biogen Idec, EMD Serono, Janssen Research & Development, Merck and Pfizer.
According to a statement from the Patrick Administration, the consortium is a new model that is designed to leverage Massachusetts’ rich environment for accelerating early-stage research available to the pharmaceutical industry, introducing academic researchers to the challenges of targeted research, and facilitating industry-academic collaborations. Project results and tools developed will be shared with all participants.
Each participating company has pledged to contribute $250,000 to the consortium, for total initial funding of $1.75 million. They will solicit and review proposals from academic research institutions for pre-clinical neuroscience research. All Massachusetts academic and research institutions will be eligible to apply for grant funding through the consortium.
