Senate To Form Bipartisan Committee To Review DeLuca's Actions

State Senate leaders will announce plans today to create a bipartisan committee to review Sen. Louis DeLuca's recent arrest on a misdemeanor threat charge.

Senate President Donald E. Williams Jr., D-Brooklyn, and Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, R-Fairfield, said they will outline the process for investigating the former Republican leader's actions and a potential timeline for action.

Under current Senate rules, the 36-member body has the ability to censure or expel a member of the Senate.

A news conference is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

DeLuca, 73, of Woodbury, pleaded guilty earlier this month to a misdemeanor threat charge after asking a trash hauler to threaten a man the senator believed had abused his granddaughter. The threat was never carried out. He has also come under fire for offering political help to the hauler, James Galante.

DeLuca avoided prison time. He received a six-month suspended sentence and was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and donate $1,500 to charity.

He has apologized and stepped down from his longtime post as the Republican leader of the state senate.

Galante, alleged to have ties to organized crime, is awaiting trial on 93 counts, including racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, extortion, mail and wire fraud, and witness tampering.

"Folks were concerned. They would like us to explore if further action needs to be taken and they would want that to be done in a bipartisan way," Williams said last month after a meeting with Senate Democrats.
