Secretary of the state mobilizes primary day teams

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz says she's mobilizing rapid response teams to help with new voting machines.

The machines will be used by 23 cities and towns holding primaries Tuesday, including Hartford and Bridgeport.

She says the teams are experts and will be able to help with any problems.

The machines, known as optical scan machines, are replacing the old lever voting machines. The machines have already been used by 25 towns last November and 13 more towns and boroughs that had May elections.

All cities and towns must now use the new machines. With optical scan, voters fill out the ballots by hand, then feed them into a machine that scans and tabulates the votes and produces a printed results sheet when the polls close.
