Engineers are starting to plan what could be a drastic overhaul of Worcester's Kelley Square in order to make way for baseball fans and other visitors for a proposed ballpark in the Canal District.

First, though, the public is being given opportunities to weigh in.

A second public workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the Crompton Collective's White Room at 128 Green St.

The state Department of Transportation is working with the City of Worcester to improve the safety and traffic flow at Kelley Square, a complex web of streets intersecting between I-290 and where a 10,000-seat ballpark for the Pawtucket Red Sox would be built. The state has committed to funding the project, with costs not yet determined, as part of its contribution to making the stadium and a related mixed-use development become reality.

The project is meant to improve the square for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians, the transportation department said.

According to the state, 403 crashes took place in a four-year period ending with 2016, including one fatality. Of those, 21 crashes involved pedestrians and five involved bicyclists.
