East Brookfield nonprofit Second Chance Animal Services received a $1.1-million donation from PetSmart Charities to expand its four surgical centers over the next three years.
The surgical centers in North Brookfield, Southbridge, Worcester, and Springfield provides subsidized life-saving surgeries for pets, according to a Wednesday press release from the nonprofit.
“Second Chance is a place that many turn to for lifesaving surgeries to save their pets, and to keep them together with the families that love them,” Second Chance CEO and Founder Sheryl Blancato said in the press release.
The Second Chance veterinary model has a two-tiered subsidization rate: a standard low rate and a second for pet owners who are below 150% of the poverty level and qualify for additional subsidies. Fifty million pets across the country don’t have access to basic veterinary care, according to the press release.
Last year, Second Chance helped more than 48,000 pets.
The $1.1 million given to Second Chance was part of $100 million committed by PetSmart Charities, the philanthropy arm of the Phoenix-based pet supply giant, to animal shelters and veterinary care providers across the country.
“Our veterinary system is in crisis,” Kate Atema, director of community grants and initiatives at PetSmart Charities, said in the press release. “Rising costs are putting standard veterinary care out of reach for as much as 50% of pet-owning families. We need innovative solutions that make veterinary care affordable for the families in every community who want the best for their four-legged companions but struggle to meet the cost of vet care. We’re inspired by the incredible work Second Chance is doing to create solutions that will build strong families and a healthy community.”
