Seattle Firm Buys SiCortex Assets
The assets of high performance computer maker SiCortex Inc. were recently acquired by Cray Inc., a maker of supercomputers in Seattle, for an undisclosed amount.
Maynard-based SiCortex closed its doors in May and sought bidders for its assets. Gerbsman Partners of California took bids for the assets in June, but refused comment about the sale. Cray officials said it plans to use some of SiCortex's PathScale compiler software code in its own future compiler products.
It will also contribute other parts of the PathScale intellectual property to the open source community through an alliance with NetSyncro.com of California, which makes commercial products from open source technology.
NetSyncro.com will continue developing the PathScale Compiler Suite, provide support for users of the software and will rebrand the effort under the original PathScale name, according to Christopher Bergstrom, PathScale's new chief technology officer. Bergstrom is also the CTO of NetSyncro.com. The company will offer a commercial version of the compiler and an unbranded version for the open source community, he said.
Bergstrom said his company has been negotiating with Cray since before the asset auction in the hopes of keeping the PathScale code available to the open source community.
