Anna Maria College in Paxton appointed Chioma Ugochukwu as the school’s senior vice president for academic affairs, starting Sept. 1.
She replaces 24-year Anna Maria leader Christine Holmes, who retired on June 30, according to a Wednesday press release from Anna Maria.
Ugochukwu previously served in leadership roles at three other Catholic Universities, Marquette University and Mount Mary University in Wisconsin, and most recently at Cabrini University in Pennsylvania, where she served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.
She is a journalist and lecturer, winning recognition from the City of Philadelphia, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Ada Frances Miller Excellence in Journalism award.
Born in Nigeria, Ugochukwu earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka and her Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin.
Anna Maria also promoted John McLaughlin to vice president of enrollment. McLaughlin was hired by the college in 2021 as dean of undergraduate admissions, and worked his way quickly up to associate vice president of enrollment in 2022.
The previous vice president of enrollment, John Hamel is transitioning to a position supporting the growing number of international students at Anna Maria College.
“I am excited to welcome Dr. Ugochukwu to Anna Maria College and congratulate Dr. McLaughlin on his new role. Both individuals embody our mission to educate and focus on the whole person,” Anna Maria President Mary Lou Retelle said in the Wednesday press release.
