Tina Sbrega, the president and CEO of GFA Federal Credit Union, will retire next spring after more than a decade as the head of the Gardner institution.
Sbrega has been with GFA for four decades, and since 2009 has been its president and CEO, a period of time in which she expanded GFA's headquarters, bought Monadnock Community Bank in New Hampshire, and began the first Massachusetts banking institution to serve cannabis growers and sellers.
GFA announced Sbrega's planned retirement on Friday. She will continue to chair a credit union subsidiary, Lighthouse Biz Solutions. A search firm has been hired to find her successor.
“I have had such a tremendously rewarding career," Sbrega said in a statement. "It has been such a fulfilling experience to have had the privilege of serving as the leader of such a quality and forward thinking organization."
Sbrega joined GFA in 1980, and in that time, the credit union has expanded from one location to nine, and from $70 million in assets to $590 million. Her efforts outside of the credit union include serving as a trustee for Heywood Healthcare and Mount Wachusett Community College, both in Gardner, and co-founding the Women's Circle of Giving, which supports efforts to improve the lives of women, children and families in the Gardner area.
The Cooperative Credit Union Association, a nationwide industry group, inducted Sbrega into its hall of fame this year.
