Tina Sbrega, the president and CEO of GFA Federal Credit Union, has been inducted into the Cooperative Credit Union Association after more than a decade leading the Gardner institution.
Sbrega has been with the credit union for four decades, including serving as its top executive since 2009. GFA has grown exponentially over her tenure there, expanding from one location to nine, and from $70 million in assets to $590 million. In her time as president and CEO, GFA has added three branches, more than doubled its assets, expanded its Gardner headquarters, and bought Monadnock Community Bank, which is now its Peterborough, N.H., branch.
Sbrega has made headlines for GFA for boldly venturing into the legalized cannabis industry, becoming in 2018 what it says is the first Massachusetts banking institution to serve cannabis growers and sellers. Her community work has included serving as a trustee for Heywood Healthcare and Mount Wachusett Community College, and co-founding the Women's Circle of Giving, which supports efforts to improve the lives of women, children and families in the Gardner area.
GFA, which announced Sbrega's hall of fame induction on Thursday, said she was recognized for her devotion to the credit union movement, making significant impact with her inspirational leadership, bold decision-making and her commitment to delivering exemplary service. The Marlborough-based CCUA, a national industry group, inducts three new members into its hall of fame each year.
GFA was founded in 1938 as the Gardner Franco American Federal Credit Union.
