SatCon, a Boston-based electronics firm with operations in Marlboro and Worcester, has been awarded a Phase 1 SBIR contract with the U.S. Navy to develop a bi-directional universal input/output "Multiverter."
The award will enable SatCon to develop a truly universal bi-directional isolating power converter module. The award amount was not disclosed.
The bi-directional converter was developed on other technologies developed for the Army Research Laboratory, allowing it to become a versatile generation interface for linking shipboard energy sources such as fuel cells, batteries, and energy storage sources to the ship's electrical distribution system. The proposed benefits of such an installation are greater efficiency and fuel savings.
The results of the research can also be used for other applications, such as "all electric vehicle" programs and alternative energy markets. An example of such an application is a Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle, where the efficient switching between energy sources is a critical function.
