A sprawling, 173,000-square-foot Marlborough facility occupied by medical device company Hologic since before the company moved its headquarters to the city has sold for nearly $17.2 million.
The site at 445 Simarano Drive is located a mile down the street from Hologic's headquarters at 250 Campus Drive.
Hologic has leased the building since 2006, originally through Cytyc Corp., a firm it merged with in 2008 when Hologic was based in Bedford. Marlborough lured Hologic to the city in 2015 with an extension of a property tax break.
The Simarano Drive building was bought by Metropolis Bloomfield Investors of San Francisco. It was sold by another San Francisco entity, 445 Simarano Drive Marlborough LLC. The sale closed Nov. 15.
Metropolis Bloomfield investors specializes in managing research-and-development facilities in California and New England. Its other Massachusetts locations are in Wakefield and Canton, according to its website.
The 17-acre site last sold in 2005 for $6.6 million. It was last assessed at $12.3 million.
Hologic will continue leasing the facility, a spokesman said.
