Sales Gains For TJX, BJ’s In July

Two MetroWest discount retail powerhouses reported similar July sales gains as customers continued to pinch pennies.

BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. of Natick said it saw increases in food sales, especially dairy, juices and prepared foods. The company posted sales of $770 million in July, a 6.6 percent increase over the same month a year ago.

Departments that reported weak sales at BJ’s included apparel, which is not a problem for Framingham-based TJX Cos. Inc.

TJX said sales for the month were $1.5 billion, a 6 percent increase over the same period a year ago.

TJX operates T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and other discount retailers.
