After two summers of being operated by Boston-based Harpoon Brewery, the beer garden at Worcester’s Mercantile Center is set to be taken over by Salem-based Notch Brewing.

Pending approval from the Worcester License Commission, Notch is slated to take over the beer garden beginning June 11, according to an commission agenda for its May 30 meeting that was posted to the City’s website on Friday. The company is seeking the commission’s permission to operate the beer garden Tuesdays through Sundays until July 16.

Founded in 2010, Notch operates taprooms in Salem and Brighton. The business focuses on brewing traditional lagers and ales with modest alcohol contents, according to Notch’s website.

Notch’s offerings include Pils, a Czech-style pale lager with 4% ABV, and Left of the Dial, a British-style IPA with 4.3% ABV. The company produces two different styles of non-alcoholic beers.

The beer garden space will seat 225 patrons, according to an email Notch sent to WBJ. In addition to outdoor seating, the beer garden will include a retrofitted shipping container with seating for 25 and a service counter. The beer selection will include five core brands from Notch and five rotating selections.

The beer garden will be equipped with side pull faucets, a tap that is submerged in the beer to create the creamy head common to Czech-style beers.

Harpoon first opened its beer garden at Mercantile Center in the summer of 2022, offering cocktails and snacks in addition to beer. The beer garden is located in a pedestrian space between The Mercantile restaurant and the nearby Ruth's Chris Steak House location.

While Harpoon will no longer operate the beer garden, fans of the employee-owned company will still be able to find its product nearby; earlier in May, the company launched a WooSox-inspired beer that is available at Polar Park and retailers, bars, and restaurants in the Worcester area.
