Saint V’s Opens Behavioral Health Unit

Saint Vincent Hospital today officially opened a state-of-the-art behavioral health unit that will include 13 beds for acute psychiatric patients on its main campus in downtown Worcester.

"We have a long history of meeting the needs of the community, especially vulnerable populations, and we are thrilled we can continue to do that," said Erik G. Wexler, CEO of Saint Vincent and New England president of its parent company, Vanguard Health Systems, in a prepared statement.

"This new state-of-the-art facility will help us serve patients more effectively right here at the hospital, as opposed to our old site at Vernon Hill," said Dr. Jyotikaben Patel, chief of psychiatry at Saint Vincent’s.  "With this new unit patients will receive 24/7 care on site with access to the best doctors in Central Massachusetts."

In addition, Vanguard said it’s also earmarking an additional four inpatient psychiatric beds at another of its Central Massachusetts hospitals, MetroWest Medical Center (MWMC) in Natick, which also has 12 youth psychiatric beds.

"We wanted to ensure that the mental health population in our entire coverage area has access to quality care. I am pleased that Vanguard Health will be able to provide compassionate care to patients throughout Central Massachusetts," said Richard J. Curcuru, executive director of behavioral medicine for Vanguard’s New England market.
