Saint Vincent found at fault in wrong kidney removal

WBJ File Saint Vincent has no specific plans yet for its three new Washington Square parcels, other than for employee parking.

Following an investigation into the removal of a kidney at Worcester’s Saint Vincent Hospital, the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services found the hospital at fault and threatened to cut Saint Vincent from the Medicare program unless changes are made, according to multiple news sources.

Reports detailing an investigation by the federal agency and the Mass Department of Public Health reportedly state that the surgeon looked at the CT scan of a patient of the same name, the Telegram & Gazette reported.

New protocols have been put in place, according to the Boston Globe, although federal officials questioned the timing of these protocols that were apparently not implemented after three previous instances of patient misclassification.

"We are working to implement enhanced safeguards as identified in the CMS survey, including additional verification steps with physicians," Saint Vincent Spokeswoman Erica Noonan said in a statement. "This was a deeply unfortunate situation and we will take all steps necessary to prevent it from happening again."
