RXi-UMass Project Gets $750K Grant

RXi Pharmaceuticals Corp. of Worcester and the University of Massachusetts Medical School will receive one of the first cooperative research grants distributed by the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.

The grant will help fund an effort to develop orally delivered RNAi therapeutics to treat inflammatory diseases.

The collaboration was one of six projects funded, out of 27 that submitted applications. The money will be matched by RXi, giving the project a total of $1.5 million in funding.

Michael Czech and Gary Ostroff of UMMS will lead the project. Czech is professor and chair of molecular medicine and professor of biochemistry and molecular pharmacology. Ostroff is a research professor of molecular medicine.

The MLSC grants are part of a 10-year, $1 billion initiative to support the life sciences in Massachusetts.
