RXi Pharmaceuticals, which expanded within Gateway Park in Worcester in the fall, has extended its lease there through August 2011.
RXi moved into 6,200 square feet at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park in December 2007, and has since added staff and about 835 square feet of space. The new lease extension was signed late last month. The biopharmaceuticals company also has an option to take additional space as Gateway Park grows, according to WPI.
Gateway Park is planned to include as much as 500,000 square feet of laboratory and research space in five buildings, as well as more than 200,000 square feet of residential and retail space. The park's one existing building totals about 120,000 square feet.
RXi was co-founded by UMass Medical School professor and Nobel Prize winner Craig Mello. The company is developing drugs based on RNAi. RNAi seeks to treat diseases by interfering with the genes suspected of causing those diseases.
