Route 9 Shuttle Takes Inaugural Run

One of the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority's new Route 9 shuttle buses on its maiden voyage.

State and local leaders including State Sen. Karen Spilka, D-Ashland, were all aboard the debut commuter shuttle bus this morning for the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority's first connection between points along Route 9 and the MBTA's Woodland Station in Newton on the Green Line.

No one had a bigger smile on his face than Ed Carr, administrator of the MWRTA, who has worked on making the shuttle a reality for the past year. Members of the legislature, state and regional officials, as well as authority board members also contributed to securing funding for the shuttle.

"This is a huge day for us," said Carr. "This is a long sought after connection." Thirty to 40 years ago there was bus service from the MetroWest area to Boston, he said, and now it has been restored.

The shuttle will help commuters living in Boston and its outer suburbs such as Needham to reach employers like MathWorks in Natick and Staples Inc. in Framingham.

The MWRTA received $400,000 for five new shuttle buses and $350,000 for a year's operating expenses from the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Commission.

Service will run during weekdays for three hours during the morning and evening rush hours. The farthest stop along Route 9 is its intersection with the Massachusetts Turnpike.
