New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and his family have donated a mobile clinic to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, intended to bolster the healthcare provider’s work against substance use disorder among the city’s homeless.

Healthcare providers who use the clinic, known as a Kraft Community Care in Reach mobile unit, will be equipped to treat a number of health issues, although addiction will be their main priority, UMass announced on Sept. 26.

“As the largest medical system in Central Mass., we have made it our mission to care for all people in our community,” Dr. Eric Dickson, CEO and president of UMass Memorial Health, which is the parent company of UMass Memorial Medical Center, said in the Sept. 26 announcement. “This Kraft Community Care in Reach mobile unit will extend our reach beyond the walls of our clinics and medical center to provide substance abuse and medical care to people where they are and in a more private and comfortable place.”

The unit will be used by the UMas Memorial Health’s Road to Care team. Before the unit was gifted, physicians and other providers on the team worked out of backpacks and rolling cases, according to UMass. The mobile clinic is expected to expand the team’s reach, as well as make them a more concrete fixture in the city.

The Road to Care team is equipped to provide care for diabetes, hypertension management, hepatitis C and HIV screening, women’s health care, vaccines, basic mental health care, and more.
