Right-To-Repair Eyes 2012 Ballot

The Right To Repair Coalition said that 50,000 state residents have provided signatures to support legislation it says would level the playing field between auto dealership mechanics and independent repair shops.

The group needs 68,911 signatures by Nov. 23 to place a statewide ballot question on the Nov. 2012 election ballot.

The coalition says its legislation would require automobile manufacturers to provide more non-proprietary repair information, such as computer repair codes, to independent mechanics.

Auto makers and even some independent mechanics argue that they already provide the information and that the bill would force the release of trade secrets.
