Lawmakers are examining potential price caps, insurance requirement and criminal record checks as they draft legislation regulating ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft, according to House Speaker Robert DeLeo.
During an interview Thursday morning on Boston Herald Radio, DeLeo said Uber and Lyft have become a “very hot issue in the Boston area” and said the companies are “here to stay” given their popularity, particularly with younger adults.
DeLeo declined to rule out price caps after host Jaclyn Cashman said ride-hailing companies had jacked up rates during last winter’s snowstorms.
The Financial Services Committee has spent months reviewing testimony from various parties, including the cab and livery industries, on how to regulate ride-hailing companies.
DeLeo said Wednesday he expects a bill to emerge in February.
