Marlborough medical robotic device firm ReWalk Robotics is now validated as a medical aid company in Germany.

The company’s Personal 6.0 Exoskeleton System was added to the official list of medical aids by the German National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, the company announced Tuesday.

According to ReWalk, the system is the first and only exoskeleton device for spinal cord injury patients included in the national list, which means the device is officially recognized as a medical aid throughout Germany.

The German Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection announced the addition of the system to the list, with a medical code indicating medical use for bilateral paralysis of the hip, thigh and lower leg muscles and loss of ability to walk.

Effective immediately, health insurance beneficiaries can apply for coverage of the system using a corresponding medical aid code.

CEO Larry Jasinski said the news sets a milestone for the company and spinal cord injury patients.

“The German health system has distinguished itself as a global leader of innovative health care policy for its citizens,” Jasinski said.

In 2015, the company announced the first U.S. private insurance coverage, and a Florida court ruled in 2017 that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida must provide coverage of a system for a plan member with a spinal cord injury.
