Marlborough-based ReWalk Robotics, which has commercialized a robotic exoskeleton for paraplegics, said a major German insurance company will reimburse a ReWalk system for personal use.
The company, which also has offices in Germany and Israel, has been working on reimbursement policies for its ReWalk Personal system across the globe in order to make them widely available.
“This announcement is a significant development for people with spinal cord injury who wish to own an exoskeleton system, and a major milestone for our company,” ReWalk CEO Larry Jasinski said in a statement.
Three other German insurers have issued reimbursement for ReWalk systems, which allow users to walk upright. But the latest is the first major German insurer to do so, according to the company. ReWalk did not identify the insurance company due to a confidentiality agreement.
“We believe this favorable decision by one of the largest German insurance companies is a sign of progress in development standard reimbursement policies … around the world,” Jasinski said.
According to ReWalk, the German patient who will receive a system under the latest reimbursement has been confined to a wheelchair since an accident in 1999. The patient saw the ReWalk demonstrated at a trade show and contacted the company to inquire about the product.
The German insurer will issue reimbursement for ReWalk Personal systems on a case-by-case basis, ReWalk said.
