ReWalk becomes certified Medicare provider

Marlborough medical technology company ReWalk Robotics is officially an authorized Medicare provider, the company announced on Tuesday.

ReWalk received the certification from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The company makes devices for people with paralysis and spinal cord injuries, to help them with walking.

With the certification, ReWalk may now bill Medicare directly for its ReWalk Personal Exoskeleton for Medicare beneficiaries, according to ReWalk. The company is now listed in the Medicare.gov supplier directory.

“As proud pioneers in this industry, gaining provider status is an important next step for improving access to our Personal Exoskeleton,” said Larry Jasinski, ReWalk CEO, in a statement. “However, accreditation does not guarantee coverage policies, so the company is evaluating pathways and opportunities to adjoin accreditation with provider policies to get our Personal Exoskeleton to more members of the spinal cord injury community.”

In July, ReWalk’s 6.0 Exoskeleton system received a CMS Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System Level II Code, the first type of code issued for an exoskeleton medical device, according to ReWalk. That designation was effective as of Oct. 1.

As the code takes effect, ReWalk plans to pursue in-network status with private insurance companies.
