Retail Sales Inch Up

Retail sales nationwide increased 0.4 percent to $366.3 billion in April, an almost 9 percent jump from the same time last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Gas station sales increased from $36.1 billion in March to $36.3 billion in April. A year ago gas sales topped out at about $28 billion.

Clothing store sales fell slightly from $18.4 billion to $18.2 billion between March and April, but were up from $17.3 billion last year.

The estimates are adjusted for seasonal shopping.
