Research Bureau Founder Retiring
Roberta Schaefer, who helped found the Worcester Regional Research Bureau nearly 30 years ago, and its president and CEO, will retire around the end of the year, the organization announced today.
Schaefer broke the news to the bureau’s board of directors last night, according to a statement from the organization. She will retire at the end of the year or as soon after that point following the hiring of her replacement.
“The Research Bureau has benefited greatly from the vision and strong leadership of Dr. Schaefer,” said Karen Duffy, chairman of the board. “It is not an exaggeration to say that she has been the foundation of the organization from its inception and has built an enviable body of work over her tenure.
“The reputation and credibility of The Research Bureau and its reports are due in very large part to her efforts and passion for compiling and distributing timely, critical information to the residents and businesses of Greater Worcester.”
In her role, Schaefer has been responsible for overseeing the research, writing and editing of some 340 reports and organizing almost 200 public forums and annual meetings on a variety of public policy issues affecting the lives of those who live in the Worcester area.
Prior to her position at the research bureau, Schaefer taught political science at several colleges and held research positions in Washington and Chicago. She has also served on the boards of a variety of city and state organizations. She was a member of the Massachusetts Board of Education from 1996-2007 during the implementation of the Education Reform Act of 1993. She has also served on the boards of Greater Worcester Community Foundation, Congregation Beth Israel, Solomon Schechter Day School, Worcester State University, and the Worcester chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women.
