Report: Venture capital investment up 11 percent in '06

Venture capital investment rose 11 percent in New England in 2006, according to research from the MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and the National Venture Capital Association.

Total investment for venture capital investment in New England rose to $3 billion on 413 deals, representing an 11 percent increase in dollar value and a 2 percent increase in deal volume over 2005.  The average deal size in 2006 was $7.35 million.  New England venture capital funding in Q4 of 2006 was $695.2 million, a 6.3 percent increase over Q3.  The 96 deals during the quarter represented an average value of $7.24 million.

The biotechnology sector lead all sectors in Q4 2006 with $190.4 million, 27 percent of total New England venture capital funding during the quarter.  However, this was a decrease from the previous quarter, which had seen the sector's highest dollar total in three years.  The software and industrial/energy sectors trailed biotech, but both posted gains.  Three of the top five deals of the quarter were in energy-related companies.

While the majority of the large deals occurred in areas outside Central Mass., Westboro-based Optasite received $27 million in later-stage funding, representing one of the year's more significant investments.
