Merger-and-acquisition activity in Massachusetts fell 39.1 percent in the first half of 2012 compared to the first half of 2011, mergermarket announced.
During the first six months of this year, 73 deals worth $8.6 billion were executed in the Bay State, down from 87 deals worth $14.1 billion last year.
The second quarter of 2012 saw a particularly sharp decline, with 30 deals worth $1.8 billion compared to 43 deals worth $6.8 billion. That represents a decline of 73.5 percent by deal value.
The pharmaceutical, medical and biotech industries were most active in M&A activity during the first half of the year, accounting for 17 deals worth a combined $4.8 billion.
