Report: Mass. health plans among nation's best

Massachusetts health plans ranked among the top in the nation for clinical quality and member satisfaction, according to an annual report by the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) released Thursday afternoon.

Tufts Associated HMO/POS of Massachusetts and Rhode Island ranked number one for private insurers and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care HMO/POS in Maine and Massachusetts held the second spot on the list.

NCQA looked at 1,400 health plans nationally, ranking 507 private commercial plans and 136 Medicaid health plans, and basing the rankings on prevention and treatment and member satisfaction.

Tufts Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Health New England, Fallon Health, Neighborhood Health Plan, ConnectiCare were all ranked among the top 75 commercial health plans.

Massachusetts plans that ranked in the top five for Medicaid plans include: Network Health, Fallon Health, Neighborhood Health Plan, and Boston Medical Center HealthNet Plan.

"Our member health plans continually set the standard for the rest of the country for clinical quality and member satisfaction with innovative programs designed to improve quality and coordinate care, integrating medical care, behavioral health and substance abuse services, and pharmacy benefits to meet the specific needs of their members,” Lora Pellegrini, president and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, said in a statement.
