Report: Manufacturing Expands, Not All Industries Benefit

The latest national report shows that the manufacturing sector expanded in December, which marks the fifth straight month of expansion and the eighth straight month that the economy grew overall.

The report, issued by the Institute for Supply Management, showed that its purchasing managers index (PMI) rose to 55.9 percent, the highest it's been since April 2006. It also reported that the New Orders and Production indexes were above 60 percent.

The institute said that the manufacturing sector is recovering, but that seven industries are still in decline. Those industries are: wood products, nonmetallic mineral products, miscellaneous manufacturing, plastics & rubber products, chemical products, printing & related support activities and fabricated metal products.
