Report: Invest in 'Gateway Cities'

A new report from the Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth and the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program identifies Worcester as one of 11 "Gateway Cities" that are "strategically important to the state's economy."

The other Gateway Cities grouped with Worcester include Brockton, Fall River, Fitchburg, Haverhill, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, New Bedford, Pittsfield and Springfield.

The report recommends that Massachusetts take several steps to help grow the Gateway Cities.

The steps identified include: providing more local aid to the cities "in exchange for increased accountability, transparency and efficiency;" increasing education and training in the cities; and increasing "economic connections."

"The good news is that the Gateway Cities offer a real opportunity for helping the state meet some of our challenges in providing affordable, middle-class housing," said Pat Larkin, director of the John Adams Innovation Institute of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, which was a sponsor of the report.
