Redemption Rock Brewing Co. in Worcester and Dorchester Brewing Co. in Boston collaborated on a new beer to benefit veteran-focused nonprofits in their communities.

The beer, a cold IPA called Bivouac IPA, will be released on Veteran’s Day, which is Friday .

A cold IPA is a subset of the India Pale Ale style. Well, kind of.

It was created and categorized in the Pacific Northwest and brought to prominence by Portland-based brewer Kevin Davey, the brewmaster for Wayfinder Beer. The subset is similar to India Pale Lagers, which have come to prominence thanks to Framingham’s Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers. A cold IPA is basically a West Coast IPA brewed with corn and/or rice in the mash bill and uses lager yeast fermented at a warmer temperature and uses corn and rice in the mash to give it a cleaner and dryer finish while allowing the hops to shine with a bright, clean and light finish. This version is brewed with Citra and Sabro hops.

Redemption Rock was certified as a B Corp. in October 2020, becoming the second business in Worcester to do so. As a B Corp. the company’s mission is focused on benefiting society, rather than focusing exclusively on profits. In addition to efforts like Bivouac IPA to benefit veterans’ groups, Redemption Rock donates the tips from its customers each month to a rotating list of Central Massachusetts nonprofits.
