Red Hat expands to booming Fort Point

Red Hat, a software company that spent $52 million to expand its Westford offices in 2014, has opened an office in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood to be near where GE is building its new headquarters and Amazon is looking to establish a presence.
The new 40,000-square-foot Boston facility, whose opening was announced last week, is meant to complement the Westford offices, which serve as the North Carolina company's worldwide engineering and product headquarters.
"The decision to expand into the city of Boston was driven by the city’s reputation as a premier technology hub, its history of computer science technology development, and the area’s many world-class universities, which produce some of the nation’s top technology talent," Red Hat said in a statement announcing the new space.
Red Hat, a leader in open-source information technology solutions, has 175,000 square feet of space in Westford after an expansion three years ago. The Boston space is meant as an alternative to the suburban office park, with features such as a speakeasy-style bar.
