Dear Editor,
As an employer, I know from personal experience that hiring qualified workers with disabilities makes good business sense. Businesses gain dedicated workers and create diverse work groups, resulting in more creative teams and outcomes. Employees feel a sense of pride in working for a company whose management has done the right thing.
And at a time when it is sorely needed, the Massachusetts economy benefits from increased tax revenue and reduced public assistance payments.
Modern technology has made it possible for almost anyone with a disability to work. Agencies such as Easter Seals, with its Great Hires program, also offer important services, including qualified job candidates, and assistance with workplace accommodations and other job-related issues.
As we commemorate Disability Employ-ment Awareness Month in October, I urge local employers to hire people with disabilities and make a difference in your business and our community.
Ladd Lavallee
Co-president, Laddawn of Sterling Board chairman of the Easter Seals Massachusetts
