Worcester and Gardner nonprofit RCAP Solutions is launching a program designed to address drinking water issues in North Worcester County, the organization announced on Thursday.
Dubbed the North Central Massachusetts Private Well Program, the initiative will provide complementary assessments and testing to identify contamination and provide public education. The program will work with local health boards and other partners to promote better public health and safety for households with private wells.
According to the press release, private wells are not regularly checked the way public water systems are. RCAP is looking for local homeowners with private wells who are interested in participating, with the aim of assessing at least 20 wells this year. Water quality analyses carried out through the program will look for contaminants like arsenic, chloride, copper, fluoride, iron, lead and hardness, among others.
The program is funded by a $196,150 Synergy Initiative Planning grant from The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts.
