Raytheon Co. has been awarded up to $1.63 billion from the U.S. Navy to build and deliver next-generation air and missile defense radar, the company said.
The defense contractor, which has operations in Marlborough, has also demonstrated technology that could make military satellite communications more affordable without compromising security, the company announced today.
The Waltham-based company beat out two other offers to build the radar technology for Arleigh Burke class destroyers, which will be used starting in 2016.
The integrated radar is designed for long-range detection and engagement of advanced threats, the company said. The base contract is valued at $385.7 million, but options included in the deal could bring its total value to $1.63 billion.
The company said its tactical waveform would allow forward-deployed forces or remotely piloted aircraft to more reliably pass along sensitive data, even in environments where communications can be jammed. Raytheon said the technology can operate on several different frequency bands, and provides anti-jam capabilities not available today on unprotected satellites.
