Raytheon receives $375M intelligence and space contract

Courtesy/Raytheon Technologies Raytheon has received an FAA contract for upgrades to the Wide-Area Augmentation System, a space-based precision navigation system.

Raytheon Technologies’ intelligence and space division has been awarded a Federal Aviation Administration contract with a ceiling value of $375 million over 10 years.

The defense contractor, which has operations in Marlborough, has received a competitive indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract by the FAA. At contract award, $215 million in task orders were executed for Raytheon to provide technical refresh and dual frequency operation upgrades to an FAA space-based precision navigation system called the Wide-Area Augmentation System, or WAAS.

Raytheon has been the prime development contractor for this system since 1996, according to a Wednesday press release from the company. Work for the effort will be based in Fullerton, California.

The system provides GPS corrections for critical navigation for the aviation community, first responders, and other government agencies. It ensures pilots can land safely even among weather challenges, according to the company.

In this phase, Raytheon will develop more modern processing, system security, and network architecture for the WAAS, while adding dual frequency service.
