The enhancements are being made under a contract modification with the army, Raytheon said. The addition of what it calls Mode S will allow the system to query targets individually and track and identify targets passively, without using radio frequency.

The army requires the use of Mode S interrogations to maintain its ability to distinguish the intent of and to identify and avoid non-enemy targets in airspace, Raytheon said.
