Raytheon Lands $72M Patriot System Contract

Defense contractor Raytheon has landed nearly $72 million in contracts from the Army to upgrade the Patriot Air and Missile Defense System.

Raytheon, which has operations in Central Massachusetts, said it will enhance the Patriot system with two technologies that will improve the reliability of radar within the defense system by 40 percent. It will also boost the safety of soldiers in the field and will allow them to better defend against evolving threats.

Raytheon said the contracts – totaling $71.7 million – were awarded in the second and third quarters of this year.

The Patriot system made its debut in the first Persian Gulf war in 1991, when U.S. troops helped drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait, which it had invaded and taken control of in August 1990.
